Research into 3 existing A2 Music Videos

Canopy Climbers- Stuck

The use of different shot lengths and shots in general are very effective. The time lapse shots of the sunset and the clouds moving for example create the feeling that time is passing. I also find the cross cutting to the miming from the narrative significant as it allows you to follow the story as well as feel the emotion and mood of the character. The angles are creative and quite contemporary- they make the video seem much more exciting and unique. Also allowing you to view angles from different perspectives. I also like the use of lighting to emphasise emotion and characteristics. The miming for example is set in a lamp lit room and we can see that it is dark outside- allows us to learn about the narrative and storyline behind the lyrics.

Tove Lo- Habitats

Setting the scene to this music video is effective as it is achieved through the use of wide city shots and time lapses. This allows the audience to understand that the video might be based on city life, people living there or even that it is just influenced by the busy passing of time. Before the lyrics even start, the shots change per beat and each time we learn something new about the narrative. Editing is used effectively in the fading in and out of city light, cutting of shots and flickering of lights. The different camera angles are also used to effect in that each time they suggest something new about where she is from, what she is like etc. For example, the low shot of the photograph on the floor (of suggestible, her family) implies that she is homeless or that they have died or left her. This is further suggested by the close up shots of her facial expressions and the facial expressions/mimed shouting  of the man who supposedly finds her. I find the use of narrative significant however I also enjoy the cuts into the miming. It re-introduces the song and also adds expression and we concentrate on the lyrics a bit more.

Labrinth- Express Yourself

I enjoy the way the shot lengths correspond with the rhythm of the music. The narrative is unique and exciting and there is a mixture of narrative and miming like the previous videos. The miming is arty and colourful- editing is bold and is presented in way of shadow. The range of shots are exciting and lively especially during the chorus when the shots are short and snappy.
